Handcrafted Through Days of Trial and Error
Loving plants is simple. Growing them well is not. Around the world, countless people share the same worry: give too much water, and roots will rot; give too little, and plants wither. Even with the greatest care, mistakes happen.
It was out of a wish to protect plants from such failures that SUStee was born.
Its creator, former president Ryu Orihara, first discovered the healing power of plants during his sensitive teenage years. When he faced personal struggles, tending herbs soothed his heart and deepened his love for plants. Yet even he often struggled with watering. Despite his care, root rot sometimes claimed his plants. From this frustration grew the determination to create a tool that could reveal, at a glance, the right moment to water.
Thus began a journey of handwork, persistence, and trial-and-error̶the path that led to the creation of SUStee.
But making that vision a reality was anything but easy.
The challenge lay in finding a material that could draw moisture all the way to the top of the device while resisting decomposition in the soil– yet still accurately reflect the subtle “force” with which roots absorb water. Countless prototypes were made by hand, checked every three hours, day after day. Painstaking though it was, in a place devoted to creating something truly meaningful for plants, that effort never felt like a burden. It was simply part of the journey.
Through collaboration with Tokyo University of Agriculture, research institutions, and producers in the horticultural industry, SUStee finally took shape. The result was a watering checker that helps maintain the optimal soil moisture for plant growth by clearly signaling when to water.
No batteries are needed. Just place it in the soil, and it will tell you when the time is right – and you can leave it there indefinitely. Perhaps it was precisely because Orihara once struggled as a “watering wanderer” himself, that he was able to bring SUStee into the world.
